Remember back in the 1990′s when 56k dial-up internet was somewhat amazing? How times have changed. The UK government and British Telecom are currently working together to provide the world’s fastest internet nation. The UK government has provided over £1 billion in broadband infrastructure investment. The funding should ensure that a 25Mb/ps minimum internet connection will be available for over 90% of the nation by 2015. Interestingly, the USA don’t currently appear in the current top 10 countries for average broadband speeds per-person, and no government funding is assigned for future internet infrastructure.

The latest research shows UK ranked number 8th. In 2010 the UK was ranked 25th, by 2015 the UK is likely to be number one.

Currently the most connected nations ‘per 100 inhabitants’ to broadband per-person in the world are as follows (speeds of over 1mb/ps):

  1. Switzerland
  2. Netherlands
  3. Denmark
  4. France
  5. Norway
  6. Korea
  7. Iceland
  8. United Kingdom
  9. Germany
  10. Luxemburg

Whilst 4G internet has only just began in the UK, delayed due to legal reasons, 99% of the UK is expected to be able to access the 4G services before 2016, making it the most connected 4G country per-person in the world.

British Telecom recently announced that they hope to provide the majority of UK cities with broadband speeds of over 300mb/ps before 2015.
