Did you know that .com and .net domain names are US based? If you didn’t, what is certain is that the owner of website www.tvshack.net sure does. An agency set up in America to tackle UK owned .com / .net websites braking US law has shut down 125 websites.
The owner of TV Shack is a 23 year old student named Richard Odwyer, living in the UK. His website didn’t have any pirated content, however, apparently it did link to other sites that did. It seems that under UK law this site is legal when compared to similar cases. But because the 23 year old was using a .net domain name, the US wants him extradited, where he could face up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $2,000,000.
Many UK websites owners who fall under this category might face been extradited to America unless the UK government rejects the claims.
